Mike's Ringing Group

Mike has run a ringing group, based at the Northmoor Trust, for many years. This works mainly on the Little Wittenham Nature Reserve, but in winter at the nearby Little Wittenham Manor in order to monitor birds from the reserve which come to feeders in the Manor gardens. Other birds also drop in from time to time. In the summer the group does the Constant Effort survey for the British Trust for Ornithology.

Mike holds a Trainer's permit, and over the years has seen many trainees learn to endure the pecking of bluetits in order to move on to handling more delicate items.

The group, consisting of Mike and various friends and trainees, also monitors the nestboxes on the Little Wittenham Nature Reserve, ringing the fledglings and housekeeping in the autumn.

Mike's Non-Ringing Surveys

After many years of doing the woodland Common Bird Census in Little Wittenham Wood for the BTO Mike completed the final one in 2000.

He also does a form of the Winter Farmland survey and of the Common Bird Census for the Northmoor Trust, and many individual farm surveys for the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust.
